World War One
Trench Warfare Assignment (40 points)
Consider the different passages we read in class surrounding trench warfare, and come up with a creative response in depth. Your response may take any of the following forms:
A diary entry or letter home from a soldier in the trenches..
An artistic response to trench warfare. This might take the form of:
Another poem about trench warfare
A piece of physical art (drawing, painting, sculpture, collage, etc.) inspired by your chosen reading. (NOTE: Although you will not be graded for artistic merit, you will be graded for effort and seriousness of purpose. DO NOT think that this is an easy way to do this assignment without doing any work).
Compose a song. I will consider the possibility of you setting one of the poems to music, but we should talk about this first.
Your project must reflect both the physical and emotional reality of trench warfare. For written responses (diaries, letters, poems, etc.), include at least 3 examples of the physical situation and at least 3 examples of the emotional/psychological situation of the soldiers. If you produce a piece of non-representational art, the power of the situation must be clearly apparent.
